Yesterday, Allyson and I went to see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Great movie, greater book I hat to say. We had a lovely time then went out to lunch at a local Mexican place where I had a killer ceviche then I came home. Took off my shoes and lo and behold, I had a huge hole at the bottom of my sock! It was bigger than a quarter, in the middle right at the ball of my foot. I was so disappointed because these are relatively new socks, made in the last few months, and they're a pair I really liked, my Hermoine's Everyday Socks. I gave away the yarn so I couldn't fix it with a matching yarn and I thought that because of where the hole was, that no matter what I did it would be an uncomfortable fix so I threw the pair of socks away. Before I threw them away, I looked at the other sock and saw that a hole was beginning in the exact same spot! I looked at my other socks and didn't see anything similar so I'm assuming that it's the yarn and not me. This time anyway.
This is the first time I've gotten a wear hole in any of my knitting and I didn't even know if it could have been fixed but I just wasn't in the mood to work on it and get frustrated. What do you do if you get a hole in your knitting especially if it's in a spot that won't be an easy fix? Did I do the right thing by just tossing the pair?
Hope you're all enjoying the holiday season. I've been busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. We're expecting twenty people for dinner on Christmas Eve and I'm sweating it a bit. If you saw the size of our apartment, you'd feel sorry for me. Ok I'm off to shop and clean!

6 Talk to me:
I saw something, somewhere recently about needle felting a repair! It would be better if you caught it when the hole is small (and it probably shouldn't be superwash, but not all my socks are). I have darned socks, but just before they actually broke through. It's just duplicate stitch at that point!
how sad to find a hole in your socks! My girls still blow out their hand knit socks, and I've not figured out a great way to darn them once the hole gets bigger than a dime... good luck to you!!!
Your holiday dinner will be fabulous!!
I haven't had that happen to me ::yet:: but as I hate to waste anything, I've already had some thoughts about it. Obviously if it's fixable that will be my first attempt. If not though, I would cut off the foot and sew/serge the cut area and use it as a coffee cup cozy (or anything else that it might fit). If it's not superwash, I'd felt it and make coasters or cut flowers out of it for embellishments. I agree thought that yours might not have been able to be saved...probably wouldn't be a very comfortable spot to try to fix it.
I've been known to mend them with a darning mushroom - a little wooden tool that is simple enough to use - but I only do it when the hole is still small enough to be simple to fix and when it's a pair of socks I'm really attached to.Otherwise, they get binned.
I've had a few pairs of socks wear out on me this past year. Some I fix, some I leave laying around until I gather the courage to toss. :'(
Was the hole in the middle? I am knitting a pair of socks w DPNs & have noticed that there is a tiny "ladder" in the middle where I switch needles. I'm now alternating the number of stitches on those needles to see if that minimizes the problem!!
