Three Down

Three down, one to go.

This morning I bound off my Waving Lace Socks. It was the first pair of socks I made using Sanguine Gryphon yarn. I used Eidos which I really liked. I liked it so much I bought three more skeins of it at Rhinebeck! It is really soft and silky with a bit of a shine to it. Here's a photo of it.

The color is much richer than the photos show. It's soft and it will be worn today!

On another note, I got a sad email yesterday. Instead of explaining I'll paste it here.

Best Beloved Knitters and Long-Time Friends,

You have loved and supported The Sanguine Gryphon, whether from its earliest days or much more recently, and by your support have made it possible for us to pursue our passion, to live doing what we love. You have cheered us on through all we have done and become our friends. It is with sadness that we now come to you to share something difficult.

In June of 2009, The Sanguine Gryphon became a partnership: two studios, one located in Easton and one located in Baltimore. It came with complications, but we made it work, and for a long time it worked really, really well.

When the economy shifted, things shifted for us as well. With time, those complications became more significant; they became less the quirky inconveniences of doing business in an unusual way and grew into significant issues that began to impact our every decision.

It has come to a point where we have had to make a very difficult decision. After a great deal of thought and discussion, we have determined that we must sever the umbilical cord joining the two studios and divide The Sanguine Gryphon into two separate companies. This allows us to continue to do what we love with the people we love, without the additional expense of trying to stretch this work
through two studios that have 65 miles between them. Our plan is to dissolve The Sanguine Gryphon as close to the end of this year as possible, and to open two new, separate companies in early 2012.

And so- this announcement isn't only about the death of The Sanguine Gryphon, but also about the birth of two new companies: Cephalopod Yarns, in Baltimore, Maryland, and The Verdant Gryphon, in Easton, Maryland. There is still much to figure out and we will keep you posted on the SG blog and Ravelry as our plans develop. For now we can assure you that both companies will carry Bugga!, that the Easton colourways will be carried by The Verdant Gryphon and the Baltimore colorways will be carried by Cephalopod Yarns, and that we will continue to be loosely affiliated and very likely do quirky yarny things together. You can expect to find all the things that you have loved about SG in the two new enterprises- it will just look a little different.

And before that? We will be dyeing and listing all the inventory of SG before our fresh starts, so you can look forward to a few months of wild dyeing. Unfortunately, it does mean that yarn bases will run out one by one. We will keep you informed via the blog and Ravelry where inventory stands. We also know that you will have many questions during the course of the next few months. Please be assured that we will address all questions and concerns as they arise and that our first priority will be to make the transition as smooth as possible, for ourselves but especially for you, the enablers of our adventures.

While we are very sad to end our partnership and bid farewell to The Sanguine Gryphon, we are also looking forward with excitement to our new futures and new directions for our creative development, and we hope that you will come with us on this newest phase of the adventure. We would love to be able to fulfill your wildest yarn dreams for many years to come.

Affectionately yours,
Sarah and Gryphon

A note, before we end this post:

If you're a member of the Nudibranch club, never fear. All of your shipments will arrive. We will step up production so that all members will receive all of their shipments earlier than previously scheduled. We will also be honouring all coupons and any other discounts which have been offered.

So the bad news is Sanguine Gryphon, as of 2012, will be no more. The good news is that there will be two new yarn companies who have proven to put out an amazing product.
If you're interested in getting some SG yarn, ya better get while the gettins good! Glad I got six skeins at Rhinebeck.

This still makes me cringe. I understand how logistical issues can hamper business to the point where it's difficult to operate, but taking something as wildly successful as SG & tossing it, hoping that lightning will strike 2 more times, it's not statistically probable. I pray that I'm wrong, but I'm grieving the loss.
