New Beginning

I'm back, babies!

Sorry I wasn't blogging for a while but a lot has gone on these past few months. And on the other hand not a lot of knitting has gone on. I've specifically left my private life out of this blog because I want it to be about knitting. The only time I really mention my family is when it's knitting related. The past couple of months I've had one kid start high school, another start looking at colleges, I've had a major operation, from which I'm now almost fully recovered and doing fine, a death of someone close it us in the family and a general loss of knitting and writing mojo. It's still a bit hectic but I'm back to blogging as you can see.

Since it's a new beginning for my blog, I decided to clean out my yarn closet and list all the yarns I have. Allyson said she did this and I thought it was a great idea. I'm not going to go as far as photographing everything individually but here's a photo of this daunting task:

As Patrick was piling these up on the bed for me, I looked over and said "It's not that much yarn!" I have no words to describe the look of incredulity on his face. I laughed till I cried. Then my husband came into the room and, in the middle of a sentence exclaimed, "Oh My God! We're not going to Rhinebeck to buy anything! We're gonna set up a table and sell!" Non knitters just done get it. You need to have a lot of choices.

I really didn't think it was that bad. Until I found these:

They are what you think they are. The same hat. In the same yarn. I think I need to clean out my stash more frequently.

Oh man, my stash is at least twice that. I'm so bad! My craft room is sadly full of baby/toddler clothing I need to sell, so I can't even lay it all out for a picture. But no, non-knitters just don't get it at all.

I must ask though, where on earth did you find GREEN row counters? I make beaded row counters and can only find red, blue and yellow. The green would be so great for some of mine!

Mine is pretty bad too... And I keep telling myself I don't NEED to buy more yarn right now, yet, I just bought two more skeins and want to go get more.

It's fun! make up some hats, or fingerless gloves, or small scarvees. Use up that stash--and buy more! (its not that much--My SABLE is scary --and it doesn't stop me from buying more yarn (not all the time, but...)

Oh I started doing the SAME thing in August. Other things have come up so I haven't finished, but I did photo and log everything in Ravelry and Excel. If you do this, CAUTION- you may not like what you see. I have it automatically tallying in Excel and I have over 22 MILES of yarn in my room and I'm NOT DONE COUNTING. Oy. Good thing? I'm assigning projects in my queue on Rav as I'm going so there's no stray yarn around. Good to see you back and recovering!

i think my stash is bigger than that. i'm afraid to find out. i have photographed most of it for ravelry, but it's not all there yet. currently i have 103 yarns there. ugh.

I looked at your picture then said aloud, "Pffft, that's not that bad." According to Ravelry, I have 144 yarns stashed (and the vast majority are multiple ball lots). I had less in March, which is when I took it all out to photograph it and it wouldn't all fit in the frame then...

And that's not even counting my 100% acrylic and novelty yarn stash, neither of which I have uploaded to Ravelry...

My stash was organized last month. I bought large plastic zip bags to store my yanrs onto a large shelf unit. I have sorted the yarn by color and fiber content. The set up isn't perfect yet but it is far better than totes. Half the yarn ended up on the floor when I went hunting for the perfect yarn.

My husband has learned there is no point in saying that I don't need more yarn, needles, hooks, or other notions. As long as my craft area doesn't take over the house, we are good. I don't complain about his dvd collection or ghost hunting equipment. Call it compromise or enabling, I don't care. It works for us!

Same yarn and same row counter, too! Yikes.

I don't think your stash looks that big. I don't stash (much), but yours looks fairly sedate, even by my standards!

My MIL said I could not have any more books, patterns or yarn. That lasted until SHE found yarn for a scarf she liked better than the one I already made for her, I found a very nice books on a prayer shawl ministry for less than half price. There is never too much as long as you have PLANS for it!
