Allyson and I started our Sock Of The Every Other Month Club last week. We went through about eight different sock books, picked out patterns, made a list and decided to pick one pattern every other month, to knit up. The first pattern we chose was from Cookie A's Sock Innovation book called Sam. I figured I'd use the Jitterbug Patrick picked out at Seaport Yarns and I'd knit up these socks for him. I mistakenly thought the pattern was made solely from using knit and purl stitches.
Ever have a moment when your expectations exceed your abilities? That's where I am now. I don't think I'll be able to do these. Not that the pattern is difficult, it's a lovely pattern and written clearly, but I just think it's not something I'm capable of doing at this point in my knitting career. It's a chart pattern, which I've never done, and it makes me a bit cross eyed. Maybe I'm chart impaired? I dunno. I just know that I started knitting because I enjoyed it. I find it relaxing and it gives my hands something to do when I'm feeling idle. I don't want to have to work at knitting right now. I think I just enjoy the ease of it too much and the instant gratification. I feel a bit in over my head with this pattern and don't want to feel that way about anything I'm knitting. I''m going to have to find something that's matched a little easier for me to do.
Now I just have to break the news to Al. She's gonna kill me.

5 Talk to me:
I hear ya sister! I am in the process of swatching to find gauge for this great beret from Ravelry. I'm currently on my fifth swatch and I think I finally hit the mark! However, I was looking through the pattern, and to be frank, I haven't seen this much math since my 10th grade algebra class. Not the most enjoyable part of knitting. But, moving on anyhow!
Yeah, I don't think the first chart should be a Cookie A chart. They make me go cross-eyed and I love love love knitting with charts.
I am so happy you started your sock every other month club. So awesome! :) Can't wait to see all those socks!
I'm not a huge fan of really complicated socks patterns that require a lot of work deciphering charts and counting stitches - so I know just how you feel. Hope you found a more relaxing pattern!
I think knowing when to quit is a good thing.
In my other hobby (a ukulele band), the rule is "when it's not fun anymore, do something else." It's a good rule.
haha chart impaired-- love it. I'm terrified of charts and don't even want to go there. I get the queasy feelings I used to get in math class when I try to figure them out... blah...
but you're a knitting goddess, so maybe you'll magically figure out the secret to charts and impart your knowledge onto meeee :)
