I Love New York!

Anyone remember those old commercials with the song? Ok the commercial may be gone but the sentiment never gets old.
This is an unusual post for me. It's a contest! I decided to combine two of my favorite things, knitting and New York.
Here's the dealio. Leave me a comment, on this post only, telling me the one thing you'd do if you were in New York City. Go to the top of the Empire State Building? Lunch at Mesa Grill, one of Bobby Flay's fabulous restaurants? Maybe a trip to my sister's store, The New York Firestore for some awesome FDNY or NYPD tshirts or hats? (Shameless plug I know but I need a new free sweatshirt). Just tell me the one thing you'd do if you were in NYC and I'll pick a winner out of all the comments. If you're lucky enough to be a New Yorker, just tell me your favorite thing to do in NYC. The deadline will be on St. Patrick's Day, next Tuesday at noon. Make sure there's an email address attached to your post so I can contact you if you're the winner.
My son Patrick, generous soul that he is, suggested that the prize be an all expenses paid, three day/two night trip to NYC to do this favorite thing amongst other things. Since he's not paying, this will be the prize:
It's 2 skeins of Nako Super Angora yarn and a copy of Knit Lit! Three whole things for one contest! The yarn is called Super Angora and is a 65% acrylic/35% mohair mix. It's 100 grams/340 meters per skein. The book is a great compilation of short stories by knitters and I really enjoyed my copy of it.
I can't wait to see what you all have to say about New York. Good luck!

I love New York City, I miss living close enough to visit. If I could do it again, I'd take the ferry out to the Statue of Liberty and then see a Broadway show. Preferably Phantom of the Opera.

Hi there! Been to NY a few times as a kid, slept in the car at the staten island ferry parking lot once! (the cops kindly stopped by to inform us that there was some gang activity down the road and it might be a good idea to move on) Lol, gotta love long road trips!

I would love to spend a day in the city and have lunch at that famous sandwich shop (name escapes me), explore the park a bit, catch a show and entirely play tourist with my camera! (maybe shop a little) My mom and her girlfriends fly in once a year for girls day, i'd love to tag along!

I'm a librarian, and ever since reading about it in the NYTimes a while ago (probably via a library oriented RSS feed) I've wanted to go to the Library Hotel where the rooms and floors are arranged by Dewey Decimal number.

It's pricey, but I think it would be worth it to stay for a night. I think I'd like to stay in room 800.005 Fairy Tales.

If ever I go to NY, I would tour all the old/famous cemeteries. Forest Lawn and Green-Wood look fascinating. I love reading the epitaphs and looking at the headstone designs.

And so I leave you with an epitaph:

In a cemetery in Nottingham England,

"Remember man, as you walk by, as you are now, so once was I.
As I am now, so shall you be. Remember this and fallow me."
To which someone replied by writing on the tombstone:
"To fallow you I'll not consent. Until I know which way you went."

what a great idea :)

If I ever get the chance to go to new york again, I want to go in the fall. I'd carry my tourist-identifier camera proudly, snapping away at the shopkeepers, bakers, parks and - of course- the beautiful fall leaves. I'd go to the top of the buildings-- but unlike my last trip, I'll remember to look UP when I'm on the empire state building. I'd eat bialies on the park bench, because I've never tried one, and watch all the busy people walk by. Wrapped in a scarf, I'd walk through the streets until I found a bookstore, pick something by a NY author, and spend the rest of the day on a sidewalk coffee shop reading with a NY cup of coffee (and maybe a NY sweatshirt from your sister!). That night, I'd get all dressed so that my boyfriend could take me to a fancy dinner and a broadway show-- but afterward we'd get icecream, find a warm cup of decaf, tip any street musicians we passed and enjoy the city until it was time to go back to the hotel.

Contest or not-- that was just fun to do :) Thanks!

I am in NYC everyday for work so I get to do lots of fun things (usually food centered). Let's see, what would I do if I could do anything. First, I would wish for a gorgeous warm sunny day and then I would head over to Brooklyn, go to Sahadi's for some dried cantalope, feta cheese and olives. Then I would walk over to Brooklyn General and hang out and knit. Then I would walk to my old hood (Red Hook) for some key lime pie, then go to the hidden beach and collect sea glass.
It's ok if I'm not eligible for the contest. It was good to think about an ideal day.

I'd go to the Lion Brand Yarn Studio, among other shopping establishments!

I've spent only 2 days in NYC, New Years Eve and New Years Day of 2002/2003. I would love to visit NYC in the summer and explore all the cool neighborhoods, just walking around for hours and stopping in to any place that catches my eye.

Kelsey said...

I've never been to New York City. One day I'll get there, and when I do number one on my list to visit will be the Strawberry Fields memorial ("It matters not Who you love Where you love Why you love When you love Or how you love It matters only that you love."), followed by the International Center of Photography (photo student, I am!), and Ellis Island (to see where my family entered the United States a hundred years ago).

I'm originally from NYC. Lived there for 22/23 years. First thing I'm going to do when I visit this summer and get a REAL slice of pizza and possible a Jamaican Beef Patty. Go Tower Isles!

Ohhh.. last trip to NY was amazing. I'd pretty much just want to have the same trip over again. But I love the Metropolitan (museum) and the off-Broadway shows. And I'd love to just walk around all of the different neighborhoods again. And get cupcakes! I'm a fan of Magnolia Bakery.

I'm only 20mins from the city but I barely get down there. Its my goal this year to hang out there at least once a week (in late spring thru summer). I'm hoping to catch a lot of off off broadway plays. I've already join a club for cheap ticket discounts on these shows. So thats what I would...will do when I get down the city.

Thanks for the contest... I'm Ohamy on ravelry.

I love NY, and regret it's been quite a long time since I've been there. If I could visit just one place, it would have to be the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I would visit my very best friend in the whole wide world and her beautiful family. We would go on an eating tour of the city. Chinatown, Little Italy, pizza, ice cream, Veneiro's, Pomme Frite, the list goes on and on. In the end all the walking and laughing we would do would be sure to burn off all those calories, right?

I went to NYC for a senior trip in high school. I loved visiting Ellis Island - to see both the museum and the walls listing immigrants who have come through the center over the years. It's awesome to see the history! My next big plan is to go back again. :)

If I ever get the chance to return to NYC, I'd definitely bring my daughter with again and we would take long walks until we could find the Cash Cab to play trivia in while we toured more of the city than we did the last time. Walking in NYC was one of the best mother/daughter vacations that I have ever had.

I've been to Rochester, New York and I've been to one other city in New York, but never to NYC. And there are a ton of things I would think about doing but I think I would eat a hot dog because I've heard so much about the NY hot dogs. I would do it while standing on Broadway and looking at the theatres. Before I left, I would have to visit the place where the towers stood and I would find a place in view of the area and I would knit something because knitting quiets the soul and brings peace and perhaps my knitting could bring some peace to the souls that are lingering there.

I love New York. I always say if I win the lottery, I'll take some of the money and live in a posh 5th Ave rental for a year. My personal favorite place is The Cloisters, which I've visited many times. My 2nd favorite thing to do is bring friends from other regions to do the whole tourist thing, from Lady Liberty to the Empire State to Rockefeller Center. We live in CT, so it's fairly easy to drive in for the day.

I <3 NYC! I would go see a taping of SNL and visit the NBC headquarters one night, and go to a Broadway show the next. Too bad they're all closing down, though :(. I'd also go see the cafe and soup kitchen from Seinfield, along with the apartment they used as the outside of the "Friends" apartment. Yeah, I watch a lot of TV.

Had to laugh at your son's prize! Quite the generous soul!! Anyway when I lived on the island, we would come out to the city and wait in line for cheap broadway tickets. This time I'd like to actually plan for a show and get great seats!!! On the list would be Phantom and I would love to see Wicked.

You have put me *in a new york state of mind*.

ah, to wake up in the city that never sleeps

i'd take the subway (knit on the subway, of course; maybe even knit on the subway standing up if i felt especially adventurous that day) to the garment district and just wander. i'd be content to just be part of the hustle and bustle of a real working section of town.

i can imagine my digital chock full of silly shots that seemed meaningful at the time: the glint of sun off a rolling rack of maybe designer stuff in crinkly plastic bags, the pigeon in flight outlined by the sun behind it (which seemed artistic at the time but was really just washed out and blurry), doorsteps, busy feet rushing to meet their next deadline, rooftops taken from street level and a close-up of the woodgrain of the pew in the church where i'd stopped to pray...

and to remember it all by i'd have the extra subway token or stub that i'd gotten at the beginning of the day, stuffed way down deep for always into the pocket of the sweater that i'd been knitting on the train in the first place.

I don't know of much in NYC... I've driven through a few times, but never had time to stop. I know there is so much there I'd probably want to see. But... If I had to pick something to do there... I'd say the subway. I know, crazy. But, I've ridden on a lot of public transit in lots of cities, and it really lets you know a lot about the people in a city. So... A few days riding the subway, probably knitting and getting off at random stops to eat and shop. Sound fun? :-)

Luckily, I live close enough to the city (yup, there's only ONE city and that is NYC!) to be able to just hop on the train and be there in no time. I grew up in Poland, lived in Germany and have been to many, many cities, but nothing tops New York. Hi, from Tallahassee, Florida.

If I had a chance to return to New York City, I would have to visit the Statue of Liberty and go to the very top! I did not visit the Lady my first time in the Big Apple because I am afraid of heights. I would deffinately make myself go to the top.

Oh, and ditto on the yarn store too! I am a newbie to knitting!
Take care, this is my first visit to your blog and its very nice. I will deffinately come again.

I grew up in NYC and I know that depending when you are visiting there is so much to do. If you are in the city for the Spring or Summer I would suggest to visit Rockerfeller Center and then take a stroller down to Battery Park and visit the Statue of Liberty. Then have some dinner at any of those wonderful restuurants.

If you are there in the Summer for the 4th of July week you cannot miss the fireworks by Macy's it is the most amazing and wonderful thing you can do. Don't forget to also if you can stop by and watch a Broadway Show.

I had the pleasure of visiting NYC last Sept. when Hurricane Ike was visiting Houston which is where I live. I even got an extended stay since the Houston airports were closed for a few days.

I did my own Knitting Tour of NYC!! I visited several LYS and met some really nice people...in addition to buying some pretty nice yarn...that the stores here don't carry.

So on my next visit I would love to visit those LYS that I wasn't able to last Sept. But this time I would like to have a friend with me. Maybe you would like to join me! You could show me those stores I didn't get to like Seaport Yarns!

When are you available? :-)
