Knitting Shop

Tomorrow I'm going here http://www.thepointnyc.com/ and I'm very excited! I'm going with my knitting friend and we're going to go out to lunch with my sister. My sister's store is in the West Village close to The Point so we're gonna kill two birds with one stone. I'm looking forward to going to a yarn shop with someone who knows what the hell they're doing. I love the colors and textures in a yarn store. Maybe I should leave my credit card home and just take cash. YAY!

Current Project

I'm knitting a ribbed beanie. It was designed by http://woollywormhead.blogspot.com/. I love her hats. They're funky, beautiful and inventive. I am way intimidated by her talent but have decided to give it a try with the easiest pattern she has. Just one problem...dpns. I've begun the hat on circulars but, at some point, it will have to be transferred to dpns. Gulp. I guess before I get to the end, I should get out a set of dpns and practice. A lot. YIKES!

A Junior First

My baby making days are a bit behind me and most of my friends and family for now. I was so excited when I saw a woman in my building with her brand new beautiful baby boy the other day. It gave me a perfect excuse to try something new! This is a .simple easy baby hat. Some ribbing and seed stitches with a lil stem on top. I loved making it so much I think I'm going to make more just for the heck of it. Maybe I'll bring some down to the hospital and put some away for future grands - nieces, nephews and eventually children.
I realized I'm really bored with my stash. I need to do some shopping and soon. Maybe this weekend I'll get to a store and get some new stuff.
OH I got in touch with a friend of my sister's who lives in my neighborhood who knits! She and I had a long conversation the other day about knitting, lys, Rhinebeck and Ravelry. She's going to go with me to the meet up in Union Square in a couple of weeks and to the opening of the new Lion Brand shop! I'm so excited! It'll be great fun to have someone who I can talk to about this all. She's much more advanced than I am and she does absolutely gorgeous work! YAY!!

Finished Hat

All done! The only problem I had was at the end. I didn't transfer it to dpns so it got a bit stretched out at the top and I had to cut it short. It was fun to do and relatively easy. The next project I have is a baby hat I just completed but have yet to photograph.
I just found out a friend of mine is also a knitter! I'm so excited! She and I are going to go to a few lys in the city and go to some SNB meets. She's been knitting for years, is on Ravelry and can teach me LOTS of new stuff. Just what I needed...a knitting friend. YAY!

I'm Outta The Loop

I just found out from http://danceswithwool.wordpress.com/ that Lion Brand Yarn is opening their flagship store in my area of Manhattan! Nobody told me! Ok granted I don't know any other knitters from NYC yet but I'm an avid blog reader and nobody's talking about it! DAMN! It's opening on November 18th and I may just drag my darling willing husband to the grand opening and score me some stash.

So Far, So Good

Here's how far I've come thus far with the Pythagorean hat. I think it's about halfway done. I'd done about a quarter of the hat before then ripped it down only to find I didn't have to rip it. I thought I'd made a mistake but I hadn't. Now I know to look at the hat I'm making more carefully next time. Seems with every project I learn something new. I'm liking this hat a lot but I don't like having to look at directions constantly. I wish there were an easier way than knitting and reading. I know that all patterns with a design have very specific line by line directions so I guess it's something I'll have to get over. Ok piss and moan time is over.
I'm searching for my next project. I'd love to make a sweater for my sister but there are a few problems. She lives 1200 miles away so I can't measure her. She lives in Florida and is always cold. ALWAYS. I'll have to do more reading and find out if it's even possible to approximate someone's size to make them something. Also, it'll have to be a very easy design because..you know...I'm not that good. Yet. Also, I have about 10 skeins of a lovely red mohair so I can use that but I don't see many patterns for mohair sweaters. I think I'll find something a little easier in the meantime. I also have to do a lot more reading. I bought about 4 how to books but haven't gotten past the first few chapters yet. I love to read. Just not directions.
Oh also do you see the little stitch marker? It's so cute! It's one of a batch which I got it at Etsy from a buyer called SilverRiverStitches which you can find here.

An Award? For Me???

I just received this award from http://craftythisandthat.blogspot.com/
This is my first award and I'm very excited!
This award is called the "ProximidadeAward" or "Friendship Around The World Award". Originally this award was written in spanish, but it translates to highlight blogs that are pleasing or special in some way, and also to extend the hand of friendship around the world. And now I have to pass this award on to 8 blogs.
I am passing it on to the following and each of these recipients should extend the friendship by passing it on to eight others.

Pythagorean Hat

I found this hat here http://smariek.blogspot.com/2007/10/pythagorean-hat-scarf.html I thought it was so cute that I'd give it a go. It's easy except for every two lines being a different pattern. I love how it looks though! I've only just begun but I should be done soon. I was working on a scarf for my brother in law's birthday tomorrow.
Check out the site above. She has some great things there.
I was thinking about going to Rhinebeck this weekend for the sheep and wool show but I don't think I'm going to go. I have no knitting friends to go with and I really don't think my ever patient husband and not so patient sons would appreciate a day with a bunch of knitters. I have to say that my husband did offer, several times, to go with me but I'm sure he'd rather eat snake poop so I won't subject him to it. I don't know enough about yarns and what I like yet to really enjoy it anyway. It'll give me something to look forward to for next year.

Autumn Leaves

I took this photo on our ride upstate this weekend and thought I'd share. I love the colors! There's nothing like NYS in the fall.

Cell Phone Cozy

Here's a cell phone holder I made for my sister. It looks a little lopsided in this photo but it wasn't really like that. I have GOT to learn to take better pictures.
This was a quick, easy knit made with just seed stitching and stockinette stitch. The strap is just an Icord which is also easy to do.
I'm hoping to get down to SoHo today to visit either Purl or The Point Knitting Cafe. I'm going to be at my sister's store on Greenwich Avenue and thought I'd meander down to a yarn store in that area. I looked on Yelp for yarn shops in the area and these are the two I came up with. They both have good reviews, 3+ stars each, but the only downfall is the price of the yarn. I can always have a look around and check the clearance bin.
That's another thing I'm so lost on. I have a HUGE stash but I'm getting bored with what's in there. A lot of the same old stuff. I want to buy online, Etsy for instance, but I'm nervous about the quality of things I can't see or touch. And prices..I don't know what would be a good price for something I like.
I really do need a mentor! A knitting mentor. A nice person who's been knitting for a while, who lives in NYC who wouldn't mind me asking all kinds of questions and who would go out with me once in a while to help me pick a project and yarn for said project. Someone who I could be friends with who could guide me along in this journey. Until then, I guess I'll keep reading and knitting on my own.

iPod Cozy

Here's an iPod cozy I made. I made it for my sistah from another mistah a while ago but couldn't post it because it was a surprise for her. I love it! The button is one my husband found while out metal detecting. I thought it looked so nice on this and thought it was so sweet of him to offer it up to me. Thank you honey!
I like this yarn so much, I'm making a PSP cozy in a similar design. I don't have a set design so I'm sorta winging it. Wish me luck! I think I'm gonna need it.
I also just quckly knit something similar to this for my sister's cell phone. I like these quick, easy knits but I'm going to have to look for something a little more challenging to me but not something that will overwhelm me.

Here it is! Here's the hat I have up on my previous post? Do you think they look similar? I think they look similar but not identical. I really enjoyed making this hat. I learned the PSSO stitch and it's the first time I had to do a bunch of rows different from one another. The first 24 rows needed instructions for each row so that was something new. I really like this hat! I think that some of my family members may be getting this for Christmas.
Thanks again to my dear model, Patch. Doesn't he look cute?

New Hat For Me

Ok I thought I'd try something different. Here's a picture of a hat I found online that I'm going to attempt to knit. I thought I'd try it this way..show you the way it's SUPPOSED to look then, when I'm done, I'll show you my interpretation (read as my mistakes) of the hat. I just started it yesterday so it may be a few days. In the meantime I knitted a kerchief but the yarn was too heavy for a kerchief although it looked nice.
I ordered some dpns from ebay and I'm hoping to soon start making *gulp* socks! I really don't know if I'm proficient enough but I'm gonna give it a go. Here's a link to the site where I got this patter for the hat:
http://www.dailyknitter.com/ Wish me luck!
